Old friends, New friends, and Montezuma's Castle

At the time of this writing, we are hunkered down and cozy in our trailer as storms blow in and out today.  It's snowing a mere 50 miles north of us in places like Flagstaff and Williams, Arizona.  So we're staying put, and I'm getting caught up on some postings.

After our trying day and sleepless night last week, we wound up at the Sedona View RV Park in Cottonwood.  On Friday morning, H was calling around to see if we had any chance of finding a campsite for two or three days in the area.  It wasn't looking good for us until one of the women he talked to suggested this place.  It's brand new, so under the radar.  It sits high on a ridge overlooking the valley.  Right now, I'm looking out my window at far-away Sedona (hence the name of the park.) I'll put a couple of photos of our view in H's gallery.

On Saturday, we connected with one of H's colleagues from his Realtor days.  It had been almost 35 years, but Mel was the same, albeit a bit older.  He and his wife of twenty years moved to Prescott Valley some time ago; and because we were only an hour away, they wanted to show us around the area.  After catching up and a great lunch at Pepe's Cafe, Mel and Sharon (who is delightful) took us to see Montezuma's Castle.

Even though it is pretty deteriorated, you can tell it was an impressive place at one time.  It is roughly five stories with about 45 rooms and housed the Southern Sinagua people between 1300 and 1400 AD, after which they left. No one knows why they left.  The structure has nothing to do with Montezuma, but was named after him when the earliest settlers found it and thought it was Aztec in origin.  It's a remarkable habitat and a testament to the ingenuity of the people who built it.

We finished the day with a tour of Cottonwood's historic district and Old Town followed by a good old-fashioned ice cream cone at Dairy Queen. All in all, our Saturday was a very good day reconnecting with an old friend and making a new one.

You can see photos of the castle in the Gallery
