We decided to make one more push to get ourselves closer to Southern California. We knew we'd stop somewhere around Barstow, CA; but we weren't sure exactly where we'd stay.
I used my campground apps this time to find a place for us. Sawtooth Canyon Campground looked promising. According to the information on the listing, it was located on Bureau of Land Management (BLM) land and it had decent cell coverage. The reviews were positive and the reviewers enthusiastic. So we went for it.
As we traveled along a mile-long and VERY bumpy road, we wondered what we were getting ourselves into. But I have to say, once we got there and found a place to set up, we decided the bumpy road was worth the trouble.
In fact, our one-night stay turned into four nights. As we were setting up, it became clear to both of us that we needed a rest. And there's something about being out in the middle of nowhere that is so restful and restorative for us.
Many BLM campgrounds offer free camping or at least camping at a very reduced price. They generally offer nothing in the way of services. Because of that, these campgrounds are usually not very crowded. This particular campground offered covered areas and tables. Our spot didn't come with that amenity, but were very happy being tucked in among the rocks. (Remember, you can click on any of these photos for a larger view.)
We declared our first full day there as a Day of Rest. It was great! We read our books. We hiked a little around and over the rocks. We stopped to watch some rock climbers. But mostly we just sat out in our camping chairs and soaked up the sun. Ahhhh!
Our pace definitely slowed over these three days. We still had some things we needed to attend to, like finding water, getting gas for the truck, and grocery shopping in Barstow. One day, I even got inspired to undertake the rearrangement of my kitchen cabinets. Their lack of organization had been bugging me for awhile; but they're good now. Ahhhh #2!
So now we're rested again and ready to move on to the next adventure. Be sure and check out H's Gallery for photos of the area.
PS: I use a few apps to find campgrounds and other RV related places. I'll post next about my favorites.
