Train A Leaves the Station

Traveling down I-5 on a rainy day can be mind-numbing.  At least, it was for me as the passenger.  I imagine H was very mentally engaged in keeping the trailer on the road.  And no, I'm not ready to take over the driving duties any time soon!  But I digress.....

We passed an exit sign for a small town that my friend, Nancy, moved from recently; so I grabbed my phone and texted her that we were near her old town.  She texted right back and told me that she and her husband had been there just days before, had moved on to visit more friends, and were now headed up I-5 towards Oregon and home.

Through a series of texts, she was giving us tips on sights to see while on the road, and that the thousands of trees along the freeway with white-ish blossoms were almond trees, while the pinker blossoms represented plums.  She was a great travel guide!

At one point, I mentioned that we'd be like two ships passing in the night.  At another point, she said they had just passed Milepost *#* and that they were in the Prius.   I turned to H and said, "I wonder when we'll pass them? It would be fun if we saw them go by."

He replied, "I don't know.  It sounds like a 'Train A Leaves the Station' kind of problem to me."

"That's just what I was thinking!", said I, as I was digging around for paper and pen. (H may or may not have scoffed just then.)

So with a little coaching from the internet and my phone calculator in hand, the problem was scratched out and the answer was texted to Nancy along with the description of our truck and trailer.

A few minutes later, we flashed our lights and four of us waved wildly as we whizzed by each other at Milepost 591!

Hey--what else are you going to do in the passenger seat on a rainy trip along I-5?  Thanks for the distraction, Nancy.  You're the best!

What are the odds! Great story and I just knew these cell phones were supposed to be used for more than playing games and checking email!
