Okay. I’ll admit it. When H told me that he’d like Joshua Tree National Park to be one of our main destinations this trip, I was a little underwhelmed.
But then we talked to Frank, our Starbucks friend, and he was so excited that we were headed here. He loves this park, and after hearing his enthusiasm, I have to say I was more interested in seeing it.
Turns out Frank was right. This is a pretty amazing place. We’ve been in and out of the park during the last four days, and have seen a lot of great landscape. This park is probably the most diverse park we’ve been in.
Today I’ll talk about the rocks. I call them rocks, but they are really HUGE piles of granite that were unearthed over time, and then shaped by the rains and erosion. You can see them throughout most of the park.
We came upon a roadside attraction of some of these rocks, and the parking lot was very nearly full. We just happened to see a dirt road that led to another group of giant boulders about a mile away. I said to H, “Let’s go down there and play in our own rocks.” That was the best suggestion of the day. There were only two other cars down there, and we basically had the place to ourselves.
These rocks look smooth, but they are not. They are pretty rough when you rub up against them. At the same time, they are gorgeous. But then granite is always pretty.
Check out H’s Gallery, so see some of the boulders we saw on our trips through the park. We'll leave you with this little guy who looks like a rock when you're not paying attention. We almost missed him as we were headed back on our hike.
