The Desert

This was our first trip to and through the Mojave Desert.  Who knew it was so gorgeous?  Well, I guess most everyone.  Because they told us it was.  We just didn't believe them.

We got to our RV park early and after getting set up, spent the rest of the afternoon exploring the desert.  We found some BLM land that offers free camping, and we may take them up on the offer soon.

As the sun was getting ready to set, we left I-40 and drove North through the Mojave National Preserve.  It was a pretty drive, and H got some nice sunset photos again.  As it got darker, the lights of a town were beginning to appear.  We could see a bright pillar of red lights above all the other lights of the town.  H thought it might be a truck stop sign, while I thought it looked like a cinema marquee.

As we reached Baker on I-15, it turned out to be the "World's Largest Thermometer".  I can now cross that off my bucket list...

On the recommendation from our friends back home, Ken and Suzanne, (as well as almost everyone we talked to around here) we headed to Peggy Sue's Diner for a late dinner. This is quite a place.  It's like a huge museum of Tinsel Town memorabilia that also happens to serve diner food. My burger and curly fries were great!

Today's story is told mostly through H's photos, so check them out on his Gallery.

Hi D&H...…….
If the World's Largest Thermometer had been in Oakesdale last night it would have shown 0 degrees instead of 68 with snow piled every place. I noticed your e-mail was sent at 12:02 a.m. REMEMBER, this is your RETIREMENT!
