Palm and Desert Hot Springs

Why drive 200 miles to see old friends in Oregon when you can drive to Southern California and visit them there?  Or why lunch with friends in your own town when you can lunch with them 1500 miles away from home?  Who knows--but that's what we did.

As we were pulling out of Tehachapi, we got an email from some dear friends we've known since our Gresham days.  Almost 37 years.  With the exception of a birthday reception almost two years ago, we hadn't seen them for years.  They noticed on Facebook that we were traveling and wanted to know if we were headed their way to Desert Hot Springs. Yes, we were going that way, and we managed to reserve the last spot in the same RV resort they were in.

We had such a good time with Gary and Ginger!  We had nice long visits and got caught up on the last 29 years. We shared dinners in each other's RV's, and they taught H and I how to play "Hand and Foot". I just might have a new favorite card game.

It was hard to say good-bye, but we'll head down to Grants Pass (where they moved 17 years ago to be with kids and grandkids), and we're going to try to find central places to camp together in Oregon.

While we were still in Desert Hot Springs, we met up with a couple we know through H's Rotary club. They winter in Palm Springs, and before we left Oregon, we let them know we'd be heading there during our trip.  They invited us to see their place and get shown around the city; and we were only too happy to accept.

We had a really nice day with Ted and Sherre.  Their place is beautiful!  They've modernized a mid-century home, and it backs up to a golf course.  It just has that cool Palm Springs vibe. I loved seeing grapefruits growing on the tree next to their patio.

They showed us around downtown where we had lunch, and then Sherre took us on a tour of many different parts of the city.  I love doing that kind of thing when we're in a new town!  It was great getting to see the many mid-century modern homes, as well as some of the "fancier" neighborhoods. We were also surprised to see that the city is so close to the mountains.

Palm Springs has always been one of those iconic places to me.  And now, when someone mentions Palm Springs, I can actually picture it.  Thanks, Ted and Sherre.  Let's do lunch sometime in Oregon....

So we were very social these last few days!  And we were nestled in some beautiful country.  H took a few pictures of the mountains around us, some of the flowers that were blooming, and some yard art.  Check them out in his Gallery.

For now we'll leave you with this sunrise that greeted us our first morning in Desert Hot Springs.
