We are spending time in the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument. Up until this afternoon, I've been looking for stairs.
The Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument covers a huge piece of land. It's 100 miles long to be exact. We were in part of it while we were in Page. We're still in it here in Cannonville, UT.
It turns out there are no stairs at all. But the GSENM is the world's most complete sequence of sedimentary rock. They say it recounts the rock history over 525 million years. Today we learned that it begins at the bottom as the Grand Canyon, and ends at the top as the cliffs of Bryce Canyon. Zion Canyon is in the middle.
It finally made sense to me when I saw an illustration of the "steps" and "risers". The steps are the plateaus and the risers are the cliffs. We've seen the Vermillion Cliffs, the White Cliffs, the Gray Cliffs, and the Pink Cliffs.
This area is really beautiful. We spent the day driving from Cannonville to the Kodachrome Basin. We then took a teeth-jarring road through the hills to see the Grosvenor Arch. Once we got back out, we took the scenic Highway 12 through Escalante, over the Hogsback up to Boulder Town, then back to Cannonville.
We've added lots of photos to H's Gallery. Just so you know, we missed taking photos of the Vermillion Cliffs. It was a travel day and we had the trailer behind us which makes it hard to stop at scenic viewpoints. But believe me when I say they are gorgeous.
Here's a picture of the cliffs behind our campground. This view is from the back window of our trailer. I love the stripes!
