TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 2--On to Montana

As we've been travelling to and from Oakesdale these last three days, we've been driving alongside many, many wheat fields. The harvest is pretty late this year partly because of the rains we've been getting. The farmers have to let the wheat dry out before they can cut it and take it to the grain elevators. And even on sunny days, they have to wait until the dew drys and then they will work until the moisture comes again at night. We've driven by more than one combine working well after dark. But my original point is that these fields are gorgeous! I wish I could convey how beautiful it is with pictures. I took one picture, but it's not great.

This morning, we woke up before the sun came up at about 5:45. So we quickly threw some clothes on, snuck out of the house, and raced down Hume Road to Steptoe Butte State Park to catch the sunrise. I don't know how high we are when we're on the top, but these pictures can give you a sense of the area. It's called the Inland Empire or Palouse Country, and you can see all the fields with little towns dotted here and there.

We got three-quarters of the way up and took pictures of the sun coming up, and then went clear to the top to see the whole area. We weren't the first ones up there either! One other guy looked like he'd been there awhile. There was a lot of moisture in the air that morning, so the horizon is pretty hazy. But can you see why I love this area so much? I love to drive through these hills!

We went back to the house, cleaned up, packed up, and had breakfast. Then we said our goodbyes and headed North. We got groceries in Spokane and then headed out of town on Highway 2. Grabbed lunch in Sandpoint, tried to get onto the internet in Bonners Ferry and failed, then stayed on Hwy 2 and headed into Montana. We finally had internet success outside the library in Libby. We're getting to know the libraries of this area!

We found a state campground about 45 miles West of Kalispell, and since it was getting late, we decided this might be a good place to stay. Had a late dinner and headed for bed.

A busy day.....
