We woke up this morning to sunshine peeking through the clouds. It was pretty chilly, so we ate in the cabin and then packed up. It was easier today because we didn’t set up the tent.

We decided to take the Road back through the Park since it looked like it would be a nicer day; and maybe we’d get in a hike as well. We stopped at places we hadn’t before and took some pictures. Things do look different from the other direction. My favorite was at the Sunrift Gorge. Herb took a great picture, but it still doesn’t do the gorge justice.
The sun was still shining through the clouds when we hit Logan’s Pass, so we decided to eat our lunch in the car and then strike out on a hike. There is a trailhead up there for the Highline Trail. It runs along the “Garden Wall” for quite a ways before it cuts back into the mountains and really starts climbing. Since we were already at the Continental Divide at an altitude of 6646 feet, we decided a flatter hike might be better for us old sea-landers.

at a great hike! It felt so good to get out in the open air again and move our legs. The trail started as a narrow cliff-side walk, then we got more into a hillside walk where we got to ford streams next to waterfa
lls, after which we walked through a forest where I actually got to hear mountain birds. After we’d gone about two and a half miles, we decided to turn back; but of course, I wanted to see what was around the bend. I took off to see what I could see, and when I was satisfied, I headed back. I decided to take another picture of our trail (Herb was waiting for me around the bend). As I was bringing the camera down, suddenly the trail looked really treacherous to me and I totall
y freaked myself out! I had to have a good talk with myself to make myself go back on that trail. I’m such a nut job!
We got back to the car about three hours after we’d left, and hea
ded back down the other side of the pass. By the way, these little red busses are everywhere in the Park. They are tour busses, and since there is a size restriction on the vehicles you can take over the Road, many people take the busses since they can’t take their trailers or motorhomes.
We found a campground in Apgar (still in the Park) and the first thing I see on entering is a sign that announces that we are in bear country, and “Bears have entered this campground”. They just want us to keep a clean campsite, which I’m all too happy to do; but it’s still nerve wracking.
After dinner, we drove up to the Lake MacDonald Lodge to check it out. It’s a very pretty lodge that sits right on the lake. I’d stay there sometime. On our way back to our campsite, I said to Herb, “You know, I hate to say this, but I think I’m sceneried out.” To which he replied, “Me, too!” We decided to give ourselves a break tomorrow. It’s a clear night out right now, so it might be a cold one.
A delightful day…..
