Ugh! It's raining today. The cloud ceiling is so low, it's not worth going too far into the Park. We left the park and headed up Hwy 17 to the Canadian Border to see how hard it would be to get into the Canadian part of the Park without passports. We were a little worried that we wouldn't be able to get back into the US because we also didn't have our birth certificates, etc. The guy on the American side told Herb that they would let us in, but the Canadians might be hard on us, so we just decided to bag it.
We drove back down and took Hwy 89 to the lodge in East Glacier because that was supposed to be a nice one. It was OK. It was right across the lawn from an Amtrak depot, though, so I thought of you, Howard. We headed back up winding 89 to St. Mary to the KOA to stay in one of their Kabins.
This was a mind-numbing day for me. I think it's because it's so rainy and the clouds are so low, that all we basically did was drive around and that makes me go brain-dead.
But we did have two highlights today:
1. We saw a real bear this morning! He was far enough up the hill and I stayed close enough to the car that I felt completely safe. Don't know if it was a Grizzly or not, but we got our bear-sighting so our visit to the park was fruitful.
2. The KOA has free Wi-Fi!! We have been in a dead zo
ne for a couple of days, so it's pretty exciting for us to get to use our computers again. Our phones are still without service here, but we can check our emails and not feel so cut off from the rest of the world. I know, we're completely pathetic!!
We had dinner and decided we'd better do laundry if we didn't want to wear our underwear inside out for the rest of the trip. All the machines were full because a tour of young people was also staying at the Kamp. They were of different nationalities, but mostly European. Anyway, the kids filled up the machines and left, so we decided we'd just sit and wait and work on computers. Kill two birds with one stone, so to speak. As we were hard at work, another couple came in. The first thing he said was, "Isn't that
cute!" Turns out they both worked for HP and thought we looked pretty funny. They were the ones that took our picture.
Herb got to yakkin' with them--big surprise; then the kids came back in to load up the dryers with their wet clothes. THEN another two couples came in with their laundry. I think we had 20 people in that dinky little room at one point. It ended up taking us over two hours to get our laundry done! But we met several nice people and had a good time visiting with everyone. We didn't get very much work done.
Not a total-disaster day...

Howard is totally jealous because you scored a place right by the railroad tracks.
Your loving daughter,
Candace
Highway 87 runs just a bit to the east; Andrew and I drove a portion of that from Winslow to Phoenix on the way to Tucson this summer. It has some beautiful white pine forest there (largest white pine forest in the US).
And thanks, Candace:)
