SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 13--Home Again

I think last night's sleep was the best I've had since we left! It was very quiet; but I could've sworn I heard horses walking around behind our tent at one point.

We woke up to a beautiful sunny morning. There's nothing like it when you're in a quiet forest. We packed up and tried to make ourselves as presentable as we could without the benefit of showers. Then we called Candace and told her we'd be in Spokane in a hour. We were meeting for breakfast before we headed home.

She picked a place called the Old European Restaurant on Division Street. It was a great place! If you're ever in Spokane, that's a good place to go for breakfast--just make sure you go hungry. Our meals were huge, but of course I did my best to eat what I'd been served. They also play praise songs in the bathroom, which I found interesting. They probably play them for the whole restaurant, but it was too noisy to hear in the dining room.

We left Candace with lots of hugs and told here we'd see her at Thanksgiving. Then pointed the car West and headed for home. We stopped once for gas and got home around 6:30.

Reflecting on the last two weeks, we decided that we really did have a good vacation. We were disappointed that we had to spend so much time in libraries; but we got to know some little towns a little better that way. Herb said his favorite part of the trip was Glacier Park, with the campground at Lake Mary Ronan coming in a close second. My favorite was the hike we took at the summit of Glacier Park. I'd do it again in a second and next time, I'd like to go a little further . There's a chalet we could have hiked into, but it was another five miles away. I also loved getting to see the sunrise up on Steptoe Butte near Oakesdale. And of course getting to visit all the relatives.

It's been fun recording our trip in blog form. Thanks to Patti for giving me the idea. And thanks to all of you who sent feedback. I'm glad you enjoyed reading this. You should know that most of the human-interest pictures came from me and my little digital Kodak. But the beautiful scenic pictures you've enjoyed have come from Herb and his fancy Nikon camera. He really knows what he's doing with that thing! He took about 200 pictures, all of them good. I'm going to enjoy remembering our vacation through them.

For my train buffs, here's a picture I took from the car. We came upon a huge train carrying coal, but we couldn't catch up to it to get a good picture; so this will have to do. This is the East end of a West-bound train. Sorry I couldn't get you a better one. We noticed that all the trains seem really long. Is it the oil crisis?

I just remembered that today is Saturday, not Sunday! So I have an extra day to deal with the piles of mail, laundry, and camping equipment.

That just made my day....

Hi Dianne. I loved your blog. I wish we could have done this while we were traveling. It wouldn't have cost us a fortune in pictures. It sounds like overall you had a good time. Nest time leave those damn lap tops and cell phones home! The world won't end while you are enjoying your vacation. Speaking of the noisy trains - Darlene and I stayed at an RV campground in Cascade Locks one night and there must have been a RR crossing a few feet from our motor home and those big Union Pacific trains rolled through there all night with their horns blasting. Glad you're home and had a good time.
