SATURDAY, AUGUST 30th--Visit with Nana

After a great pancake breakfast at my brother, Craig's, we left to spend the day with my grandmother. Nana lives in an assisted living center in Clarkston, which is about an hour and a half's drive from Oakesdale.

We had lunch with her at the center, and then packed her into the car and drove out to Lapwai to the ranch that she was born on. It is now owned by Tom and Ann Sanford, a couple from California who bought it about ten years ago and have been fixing up some of the buildings on the farm. They are delighted to know Nana since she was an original to the ranch, and are always welcoming to her when she brings visitors out.

Of course, Herb and Tom hit it right off and they spent a lot of time touring the ranch. I stayed behind with Nana since I'd been there before. The farm is on a gorgeous setting and we just sat
and enjoyed the view. By the way, I almost forgot to mention that Tom is 82 years old and recently finished putting a new roof on the old barn--by himself!

We had a good visit with Tom and then left Tom Beall Road in Lapwai and headed back to Clarkston. Nana wanted to go to dinner at her favorite Mexican restaurant, so we went to Taco Time. We got her back to her apartment, visited a longer while I returned some photos I had borrowed to their rightful albums and then said goodbye. I have to say that it gets more difficult to leave after each visit.
We hit the top of the Lewiston hill at about sunset.

This shows the Clearwater River flowing into the Snake River which separates Lewiston (on the left) from Clarkston. I love this view and stop here every time I come through. See the winding road in the pictures? That's the old Lewiston Grade road. BARF CITY!! The new highway is much, much better.

We got back to Oakesdale a little after 9:00 and headed for bed because I was too tired to carry on a conversation.

But another good day...

Hi Dianne......... I like your blog. Thot I should make a couple comments. Nana lives in a retirement center - she's not in assisted living.......yet. Was your picture at the top of Lewiston Hill at sunrise or sunset? I'm glad you're enjoying Montana. Thanks for leaving some peaches. Mom & I had some for supper last night with a little sugar free icecream on it. yummy!

Thanks for the clarification, Dad. I'll make a note of that. And you're right, it was sunset. I fixed it on the blog. Glad you liked the peaches. We're enjoying ours, too.
