MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 8TH-Whitefish

OH MY GOSH!!! We were so cold last night! When we woke up, we just threw on some clothes and drove the half mile into Apgar. On our way there, Herb braved the cold to get this great picture of Lake MacDonald with the fog. We had a greasy-spoon breakfast at Eddie's, which just opened the minute we got there. Lucky us! It wasn't too bad really, and the place was a lot warmer than our campsite.

When we got back, we packed up and left for Whitefish. Our map showed a nice state campground on Whitefish Lake just out of town. Whitefish is a ski town, and it looks pretty resorty. As we were finding the library, we saw a nice train depot with a huge train pulling in; so I jumped out and took some pictures for Howard. We spent quite awhile in the library, did some grocery shopping, and then headed to the campground.

As we were putting up the tent, the ground began to rumble. Suddenly, we heard the blast of a train whistle--no, not whistle--this was a full-blown horn! We had managed to find a campground right next to the train tracks. We looked at each other, but then decided to keep setting up because it was getting pretty late in the day. Besides, we could handle two or three trains if we had to.

Remember the depot we saw in Whitefish? Well, it turns out that it's a pretty place! Before we'd been there an hour, three trains had gone by, each one blowing the horn. Herb asked the camphost if the trains ran all night and he said, "Oh yeah!" Then he handed Herb two sets of ear plugs! He took pity on us Oregonians because he gave them to us for free.

We've had a nice steak dinner (without the nice red wine I bought because I forgot to buy a corkscrew), and now we're sitting by the campfire listening to the trains go by:) I guess we'll have to go to bed sometime...
