FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 5--Glacier National Park

I got stung this morning:( We were breaking camp and one of the yellow jackets that have been bugging us finally got me. You should have seen me dance! And yes, Howard and Kim, I still like camping.

As we were leaving Bigfork, I managed to talk Herb into driving back into the little downtown area. I'd seen a "fresh fudge" sign the day before and was on a mission. I got a half pound of chocolate and a half pound of huckleberry fudge. Can't wait to try it.

After picking up a prescription for me in Kalispell (Walgreens is great!), we headed North and East to West Glacier and into the park. Spent a fortune on gas and then drove into Apgar where the Going-to-the-Sun Road begins. We decided to have lunch before getting on the Road, so I fixed us a sandwich and we had our lunch by Lake MacDonald.

The Road is narrow and slow, and to compound the slowness, they are doing road work on sections of it; but we just took advantage of the waits by enjoying the scenery and taking pictures. Unfortunately, the day is pretty overcast, so a lot of the mountaintops were in the clouds. Still, the views were tremendous! Herb took 80 bazillion pictures, which we'll be happy to share with anyone that wants to see them....

At Logan's Pass, which is the summit for the Road, we saw a buch of mountain goats. They made me think of the Three Billy Goats Gruff, except these guys looked like they didn't have a care in the world. One guy had a telescopic lens and was right up in one of the goat's face. I told Herb that he must have been checking for nose hairs. I was almost wishing the goat would charge the guy and teach him a lesson.

It started raining as we began our descent from the summit. We took a few more pictures, but needed to make a decision about where to spend the night. About that time, we came to the Rising Sun Lodge. This lodge had a bunch of small cabins for rent, and not wanting to put away a wet tent tomorrow, we decided we'd go to the office and check it out. Found out the whole place was booked--cabins and motel! But she checked her system and found one room available at the Many Glacier Lodge which was about thirty minutes North of where we were, and still in the Park. We asked her if there was anything else available in the town of St. Mary which was just outside the East end of the Park. She said there wasn't, so we went ahead and booked the room.

Naturally when we got to St. Mary, there were all kinds of hotels and cabins. Herb checked on one in particular and it turned out to be ridiculously expensive. Then as we headed for our lodge, we passed a KOA that had Kamping Kabins. So the young lady at Rising Sun had not been completely forthright with us! Feeling like we'd been taken, as will often happen to tourists, we continued on to the lodge. When we got there, though, we were pleasantly surprised. The lodge was nicer than the one at Rising Sun and the setting was gorgeous! Turns out that they released a Handicapped room that they have to hold open during the day. We were making our reservation at just the right time.
It was a "Value" room, but very comfortable. We didn't have much of a view, hence the value price. Herb had a buffalo burger and I had a german sausage sandwich in the Swiss Lounge. Then we just explored the lodge. We found a snack bar in the basement and shared a cup of Huckleberry Soft Serve. By then, it was close to bedtime. There was no TV, but we watched an installment of HBO's "John Adams" on the Netflix DVD that I brought along.

It's supposed to rain tomorrow, so we're not sure what the plan will be; but it feels good to be in the mountains.
A "lofty" day........
