FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 12--Priest River, ID

We woke up early, got ready for the day and ran up to the breakfast room for our free breakfast. They had CNN on the TV in there and it was all hurricane news all the time. It's amazing how much news you miss when you're on vacation. We had heard there was a hurrican out there that was threatening Texas, but didn't know today was the day. We still don't know if it actually came ashore.

We got back to our room by 8:00 so we could call our escrow officer and figure out what we needed to do to get this file closed. I sent the needed revised documents she needed from me. We didn't hear anything else about this file today, so I think we're done with it. We'll know more on Monday.

We checked out of the hotel and found a library because Herb couldn't send e-mails while on the hotel wi-fi. After he got them sent, we headed about thirty miles West into Priest River, ID. My aunt and uncle have a place there and I had called my aunt that morning to see if they were there. My aunt was in California, but she said my uncle was there and that we should stop by. But our first order of business was to find a place to stay for the night.

Nancy had given me a couple of campgrounds in Priest River that she liked, but they were closed for the season when we got there. We managed to find one in Oldtown, which is about five miles West of Priest River. It was in a very pretty area, right by a river. We pitched our tent, had lunch and then headed back to Priest River. On our way up the road to their place, we found these two enjoying a snack. Across the road, there were about 20 wild turkeys in the field making a bunch of noise.

John and Nancy own about 88 acres on the side of mountain overlooking the Pend Orielle (pronounced Pond Oh-ray) River and valley surrounding it. They bought it over 30 years ago when all there was on the property was a small house and some outbuildings. They used the old house as a place to start and built a beautiful home around it. (John was the wood shop teacher at the high school there.) They didn't really demolish the old place, but you can't recognize any of it anymore. They also attached a little apartment to the house, and that was where my grandmother lived until about four years ago.

Here are a couple pictures of the view. You can see why we loved coming up here to visit.

Five years ago, John and Nancy moved to Long Beach, CA to be near their daughter and granddaughter. They turned their house into three rental units, but still come up at least once a year to do work around the place. Since the house is rented, they stay in their travel trailer which they park down by the woodshop. And that's why we had to find a place to stay. We knew we couldn't share a small trailer with John! And we couldn't set up our tent there for lack of bathroom facilities.

We found John in his shop. He's trying to clean it up because he just got a job to make custom doors for someone around there. I asked him if he had time to get it done before he went back to CA and he said, "I've got 41 days!". He loves it up here, so I'm not so sure he's anxious to go back to California. We sat in his shop and visited for awhile, then decided to go get some "supper".

He drove us to this little roadside place because it was Prime Rib night. You've seen places like this--little buildings on the side of the road with neon beer signs lit up in the windows, a reader board, gravel parking lots, old picnic tables outside, and a door in the center with no windows. We alll usually drive right by them without a second look. When we walked in, John told the waitress we wanted three dinners, and this was before we'd even found a place to sit. We found three stools at the bar and sat down. It was either that or we'd have to eat outside; but the sun had gone down and it was starting to get chilly. They had also put a ping-pong table on top of the pool table and put a tablecloth on it, but it didn't look like a good place to sit and visit. It was pretty noisy in there.

Our dinners came, and I think we each had a side of beef on our plates! We also had a baked potato with tons of butter and sour cream, green beans, a toated dinner roll, and the salad we had eaten while we were waiting. Herb and I quickly realized that we should have shared a meal. But it was really good and the folks were very nice in there. These can be fun places to eat, if we just had the nerve to go into them.

After dinner, we went back to John's place and said our good-byes; then we headed back to our campground. We had to get there before 10:00 or we'd be locked out of the park. We had a little trouble finding it. Things look different in the dark. But we finally found it, with plenty of time to spare. We cleaned up and tucked ourselves in for our last night of camping.

A vacation-redeeming day....
