FRIDAY, AUGUST 29th--The Road to Oakesdale

We finally got out of the driveway at 10:30, which was only an hour and a half later than we had planned! But there’s a lot to do when you’re leaving for a couple of weeks.

We decided to take the roads less travelled that day, so when we got to Biggs Junction we crossed the Columbia and drove on the Washington side of the river. Bryce and Lauri had told us that they do that when travelling down the gorge and we thought we’d like to give it a try. The view is definitely different on that side. There are several places where the road gains altitude and one can see a great view of the river. It made for a very pretty sight with the sun shining down on it. At one point, we passed an island that I didn’t know even existed. It has a gorgeous park on it that I think you can only get to with a boat. And the view of Oregon was great. You’d be surprised at the things you don’t notice when you’re driving down I-84.

After gassing up in Tri-Cities, we found another highway heading East on the map and decided to give it a try. It was marked as a Lewis and Clark trail and took us to Waitsburg, Washington which is a ways out of Walla Walla on Hwy 12. On the way, we passed many orchards, vineyards, and farms. It really was a pretty drive and the road was just fine.
We followed Hwy 12 to Dodge and then turned left onto Hwy 127 because I wanted to check out the Central Ferry Park that sits on the Snake River. Mom and Dad take their motorhome there quite often to stay for a week or so when they want a break. It’s perfect for them because it’s only about an hour away from their home so they don’t have to spend a lot of money on gas to enjoy a nice camping trip. It’s a very nice park and the Snake is wide there and great for boating and water sports.

After driving through the park, we continued North on Hwy 127 to Dusty, then headed East on Hwy 26 to Colfax where we turned left onto Hwy 195 and headed to Oakesdale. We got to Mom and Dad’s around 6:15. We were ready to be done driving, but had thoroughly enjoyed the trip. We set up our “base camp” and had a great dinner of smoked chicken and potato salad with the folks and my brother.

All in all, a great day…
